# Export formats

Export a module as a SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, or cmi5 package for your LMS, or as a standalone HTML5 package for any web server.

An export turns a module into a ZIP package that contains the module, its languages and media, and the learner player. Upload it to a learning management system (LMS), a learning experience platform (LXP), or a learning record store (LRS), or host the standalone HTML5 version on any web server. Exporting does not use credits.

## Export a module

1. Open the module in Skillsail.
2. Select **Publish**.
3. Open the **Export** tab and choose a format.

The ZIP file downloads to your device. A module needs at least one slide, question, or activity before it can be exported.

A connected AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude can also export a module for you. It returns a private download link that expires after two hours, and it cannot upload the package to your LMS or read learner results. See [What the assistant can do](/docs/mcp/tool-reference). The Skillsail assistant in web chat, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Telegram does not create packages, so use **Publish** in the web app.

## Choose a format

Ask your LMS administrator which standard your platform supports. If it supports several, SCORM 1.2 is the most widely compatible, while SCORM 2004, xAPI, and cmi5 report more detail.

### SCORM 1.2

The most widely supported LMS standard. The package reports a single lesson status (completed, incomplete, passed, or failed), the score, and the time spent. It also saves the learner's place and progress so they can resume later.

### SCORM 2004

Packages use SCORM 2004 4th Edition. Completion (completed or incomplete) and success (passed or failed) are reported separately, together with the score and time spent. The learner's place and progress are saved for resuming.

### xAPI

xAPI 1.0.3, also called Tin Can, is for platforms with a learning record store. Your LMS or LRS launches the package with the LRS address and the learner's identity. The package sends statements when the learner starts, completes, passes, fails, or exits, including the score and duration, and stores their place and progress in the LRS. Opened without an LRS, for example directly from a file, the module plays but records nothing.

### cmi5

cmi5 is the xAPI profile for courses launched from an LMS. The package's course structure takes its completion rule from your module's completion settings: a view-based module is satisfied when the learner completes it, and a score-based module when they pass, with your passing score as the mastery score. Completion, pass, and fail are recorded only when the LMS launches the course in normal mode, not in browse or review mode.

### HTML5 (standalone)

For teams without an LMS. Host the files on any web server and share the link. Progress, including the learner's place, score, and completion, is stored in the learner's own browser, so they can resume in the same browser on the same device. There is no central reporting. If a browser blocks site storage, progress lasts only for the current visit.

## What a package contains

- Every slide, question, and activity in the module's order
- Every language the module has finished translating into, with the language picker in the player
- Managed images, video, voiceover, captions, transcripts, and learner downloads
- The module's theme, logo, and completion settings

Learner downloads and embeds that point to an external HTTPS address still need network access when the learner opens them.

If Skillsail reported languages it could not translate, retry them before you export. A language that was never translated is left out of the package, and a partly translated one shows only the slides that were translated.

## How completion is reported

Your completion settings decide what the LMS records. A view-based module reports completion when the learner exits it. A score-based module reports passed or failed against the passing score you chose. A score-based module without any graded questions is exported as view-based, so add at least one graded question before you export it. Learners who leave early can resume where they stopped. See [Themes and completion](/docs/concepts/themes-and-completion).

## Update an exported module

A package is a snapshot of the module at the moment you export it. Later edits, new translations, new narration, and player improvements reach learners only after you export again and replace the package in your LMS or on your web server. Whether learners keep their progress after a replacement depends on your LMS.

## Check a package before you upload it

The free [SCORM Validator](https://skillsail.com/tools/scorm-validator) checks SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, and cmi5 packages for the problems LMSs reject at upload. The free [SCORM Player](https://skillsail.com/tools/scorm-player) plays SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 packages and shows the tracking data they send. Both run in your browser, so your file is never uploaded.
